31/03/08 - Queenstown

Cycle: Absolutely not a millimetre

After cycling for 17 days in a row we were seriously due for a rest day. We were beginning to get a little grouchy and our entire bodies were in need of sleep and recovery.

So, after 4000km of cycling, we were finally in Queenstown. This was my favourite place during my last visit to New Zealand in 2000. This trip is a rather different experience and I've been curious as to how I'd feel on returning to this town. Many people we've met haven't liked the place saying it's too commercial, expensive and full of typical tourists on their (to quote Nigel) "annual, one week, once in a lifetime holiday". I shouldn't have worried as I still love the place! It's got that great ski-town vibe with a great atmosphere and good shops and restaurants. Sure it's a little more expensive, but you get some a nice variety of restaurants and bars that you can find somewhere to fit your budget still. Everything is of a high quality (except perhaps our expensive campsite)

We started the day with a gentle stroll round the town park, glad not to be cycling in the wind. This was a nicely manicured park with a frisbee golf park! Next up were a few important jobs like cutting all Scott's hair off and printing, signing and sending Scott's contract for his new job! This was pretty exciting: I'll be working for a small hedge fund in Jersey, starting on the 14th July!

Feeling slightly elated we went out for dinner and drinks at what was my favourite bar last time I was here: The World. No horses or dogs this time, but they still had those teapots! This made me so happy! Claire and I indulged ourselves with sausages and mash with some red wine followed by a couple of teapots of cocktails! Days off are great!
