12/03/08 - Lake Tekapo

We were very tired from the day before so decided to have a fairly easy day in Tekapo. After rising very late we were surprised to see that everyone else had disappeared! Incredibly the two other cycle tourers we had seen the night before had managed to pack up and leave too! It was so late that the kitchen was already being cleaned so we gently strolled into town to see what there was to see and do.

We made it as far as the bakery, Doughboys, where we discovered "Yesterday's Bake" - this will change our lives forever. Mmmh, four tasty pies for the price of just over one. Mmmh. Mmmh, and custard twists for almost free too. And fantastic coffee! In giant cups! Mega! We had a happy hour or so eating our late morning feast doing a crossword with the stunningly blue Lake Tekapo in front of us. Brilliant.

After a stroll along the lakeside we had a look at the famous (in New Zealand this week) sheep-dog statue and the picturesque Church of the Good Shepherd. This has no stained glass windows, just a plain glass window overlooking the beautiful lake and mountains.

We walked up the biggest mountain by the lake: Mount John. This was a short walk but we gained 300m altitude, revealing the incredible turquoise blue of Lake Tekapo. We enjoyed some cake, tea and hot chocolate in the sunshine before heading back to the tent for some serious bike cleaning. As we cleaned away we met Josua Wechsler who's a friendly Swiss cyclist (with sponsors and everything!) - it would turn out we'd see quite a lot more of him over the next week or so!
