27/01/08 - Paihia: Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Another fairly laid back day. We walked along the beach to get to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. These were fascinating and very well presented. We learnt a little about the colonial history of New Zealand and some of its troubles. Unfortunately the information presented seems to miss out all of the recent troubles and governmental payouts made due to the colonial deviations from the treaty...

There was a huge canoe or waka used in the centenary celebarations in 1940. This was made from 2 huge Kauri trees and needed 76 paddlers and could carry u pto 50 passengers. The massive Kauri stump was there too, and very impressive. We had lunch at the "TV-featured", award-winning cafe (Claire sampled the famous smoked eel) before strolling home.

Claire and I went for a 93 minute run up the Harura Falls, Mt Bledisloe and the Waitangi Golf Course. It was the longest run we've done for some time, but our endurance legs were doing well from all the cycling! After that we cooled down in the hot tub drinking some pink fizz!

For dinner we popped next door to the Only Seafood restaurant and had a lovely meal with some good Allan Scott Sauvignon Blanc wine.
