Cycle: 26km
Despite the night's drizzle we stayed nice and dry in Peggy. We clambered out into a grey morning and had breakfast with Saima who had got up at 6:30 to go and see a little blue penguin colony. Sadly for her the penguins had taken a look at the weather and decided to stay in their nests! Sensible fellows.
We packed up the bikes and set off for Dunedin, this time to do a few jobs and to see the city centre. I cleverly, or foolishly, as it turned out, picked the Top 10 campsite as it is nearer to our exit route from the city to Middlemarch, our next destination. We had a nice ride along the coast rode from the peninsula to the city and then a cycle path into the centre. From here we picked up Stuart Street and climbed up and up and up to our campsite in the sky! I nearly died. What a dumb idea to pick the Top 10 on an easy day! At least we won't have to do on our way out though. On arrival the first thoughts of both of us were to get a bus into town - we didn't fancy that climb again!
We showered and waited for a bus that didn't come, bought lots of lunch from the 4Square then waited for a bus that did come. As we waited we looked in amazement at some of the steep streets of the city and wondered how they coped in ice. I now think living here would be crazy, its far too hilly! We were dropped off near the Octagon in central Dunedin and headed straight for an internet cafe to catch up with emails and the blog.
Scott addition: We finished the evening with a meal and some beer and some wine at The Craft Bar in the Octagon. It was nice to spend an evening out together in a normal environment! Unfortunately I left our bag of fruit and water bottles in the taxi on the way home though! I was pretty annoyed with myself but the bottles leaked and the fruit was cheap...
