Cycle: 85km
Sadly it was the day to leave Buscott, although we could easily have spent another day, especially a more leisurely one than yesterday! We said our farewells to Josua, Jerun and Tony, the host. It was another scorching day and our first destination was the Clay Cliffs, a spikey rock formation created by the weather. Unfortunately we had to cycle 10km on unsealed roads (my fave!) to get there and Humphrey got a puncture (on the non-Armadillo end). Ouch. The cliffs were awesome, you could walk right inside some of the structures and it was quite like being in a cathedral. Scott got Humphrey back over the gravel roads and to Omarama by pumping up the holey tire.
We had to cool down after our exploits so settled down in The Wrinkley Ram's where we opted for some lunch and electrolyte-loaded drinks rather than the sheep shearing show! After our (rather long) rest we cycled round to the store for dinner supplies and to pour water on our heads from the tap in the public loos (those that had the largest PUBLIC TOILETS sign I'd ever seen, biggest in the southern hemisphere I suspect). Scott was fixing his puncture outside the 4Square supermarket when who should appear but...Josua and Jerun! They had only left Buscott Station at 3:30pm because they had been watching Myth Busters on TV all day! We said goodbye again as they headed off for the Londis Pass and a farmers field for the night while we headed in the opposite direction to Kurow and a campsite, still 50km away.
The first half of the ride was awesome as we had a terrific tail wind and spectacular views over Lake Aviemore. Then the wind swung round 180 degrees and bullied us as the sun set for the remaining 25km. We arrived at the Kurow motor camp pretty dishevelled but happy to be there, especially Scott who jibbered away as the poor campsite manager lady checked us in. She started her explanation of the camp site three times before Scott stopped talking and paid attention! We got a room with a view and cooked some pasta before settling down to a warm night in the tent.
