24/01/08 - Whakapapa to Leigh

Claire and I got up early for a stunning run, up from Whakapapa Village towards the ski-lifts. Definitely one to remember.

We collected Mama J and drove a reluctant Trevor up to the chair lifts. It was a bit chilly, but well worth it. The views were spectacular, "hostile, inhospitable and alien" - what an incredible place. The mountain is so young that there is almost no soil - a perfect set for Mount Doom. The cafe had a display of interesting pictures taken from the 1985 eruption.

Our drive North was pretty good, and we unwittingly drove 30km through "The Shire" (more Lord of the Rings stuff) in the wrong direction - Scott the mighty navigator was asleep and subsequently fired! Boo! Luckily we were still heading roughly North and picked up the SH3 and busted it up North all the way to Leigh.

We were staying and dining at the Saw Mill Cafe which we all thought was brilliant. The room was large and comfortable, and we all enjoyed their great split pizzas and more Brick Bay Wine, and even got to play with the cat this time! Mega!
